## Key takeaways

- MP2 paid 7.12% for 2025, tax-free. The rate is declared after each year and is not guaranteed.
- Each account runs for five years. Early withdrawal is allowed only for specific reasons, with penalties otherwise.
- You can save as little as ₱500 per payment, monthly or as a lump sum.
- With inflation above 6%, MP2 is still ahead, but only slightly. Never use it for your emergency fund.

Block Field

MP2 paid **7.12%** for 2025, tax-free, and it is the most talked-about safe place to grow money in the Philippines. With inflation running above 6% in 2026, that number deserves a closer look before you lock money away for five years.

## What MP2 is

MP2, or Modified Pag-IBIG II, is a voluntary savings program from Pag-IBIG Fund that pays a yearly dividend, not a fixed interest rate.

It sits on top of the regular Pag-IBIG savings taken from your salary. Pag-IBIG pools the money, lends most of it out as housing and member loans, invests the rest conservatively, and shares the income with members. Under its charter, Pag-IBIG returns at least 70% of its annual net income to members as dividends. For 2025 it paid out 98.6%.

## How much MP2 has paid

MP2 has paid between 6% and 8% a year for the past decade, but the rate is declared after each year ends and is never promised in advance.

- **2025:** 7.12%, announced February 27, 2026
- **2024:** 7.10%
- **2023:** 7.05%
- **2022:** 7.03%
- **2021:** 6.00%
- **2020:** 6.12%

For comparison, regular Pag-IBIG savings earned 6.62% for 2025. The highest MP2 rate on record is 8.11% for 2017.

## Is 7% still good with inflation above 6%?

It is still one of the best safe options, but the real gain is much smaller than 7%.

Inflation was 6.1% in August 2026, and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas expects September to land between 6.4% and 7.4%. If prices rise 6% to 7% a year, a 7.12% dividend only adds a little real buying power. That is still better than most alternatives, because MP2 dividends are tax-free.

A time deposit paying 5% keeps only 4% after the 20% tax on interest, which loses to inflation. We run the numbers for every option in [Inflation at 7%: is your savings actually growing?](/articles/inflation-savings-real-return-philippines)

## The rules that matter

### The five-year lock

Each MP2 account runs for **five years**, counted from your first payment.

Your principal comes out at maturity. To keep going after that, you open a new MP2 account.

Pag-IBIG allows early withdrawal only for specific reasons:

- Total disability or insanity
- Separation from service because of health
- Death of the member or an immediate family member
- Retirement
- Permanent departure from the country
- Unemployment from a layoff or company closure
- Critical illness of the member or an immediate family member
- Repatriation of an OFW member
- Other grounds approved by the Pag-IBIG Board

Withdrawing for any other reason comes with penalties.

### Compounded or paid out yearly

You choose one when you open the account.

- **Compounded:** dividends stay in the account and earn dividends too. You get everything at the end of five years.
- **Annual payout:** dividends go to your bank account every year. Your principal still stays until maturity.

### How much you can put in

Each payment must be at least **₱500**. You do not have to pay the same amount every month, so ₱500 one month and ₱5,000 the next is fine, and so is a single lump sum.

### Is your money safe?

Under Pag-IBIG's MP2 guidelines, the savings and dividends are government-guaranteed. The dividend rate can still go up or down every year.

## What 7% looks like in pesos

Here is an illustration, not a forecast.

Say you put **₱60,000** into MP2 at the start, choose compounding, and the rate stays at 7% every year.

- **After year 1:** ₱64,200
- **After year 2:** ₱68,694
- **After year 3:** ₱73,503
- **After year 4:** ₱78,648
- **After year 5:** ₱84,153

That is about ₱24,000 earned, with no tax taken out.

If you save monthly instead, your money earns only for the part of the year it is in the account. ₱5,000 a month from January, at 7.12%, earns about ₱2,314 in the first year, because the average balance is ₱32,500, not ₱60,000.

## When MP2 is the wrong choice

MP2 is wrong for any money you might need within five years.

- **Your emergency fund.** Keep three to six months of expenses somewhere you can reach today. See [How big should your emergency fund be?](/articles/emergency-fund-how-much-philippines)
- **Goals within five years**, like a wedding or a down payment due in two.
- **While you carry credit card debt.** Paying off a card that charges far more than 7% beats any savings program.

## How to start

You can open MP2 online in a few minutes with your Pag-IBIG MID number.

1. Make sure your regular Pag-IBIG membership is active. Former members and pensioners can also qualify.
2. Enroll through Virtual Pag-IBIG, linked from the [Pag-IBIG Fund website](https://www.pagibigfund.gov.ph/), or at a branch.
3. Prepare your MID number, a valid ID, and proof of income or source of funds.
4. Save your MP2 account number. Every payment needs it.
5. Pay through Virtual Pag-IBIG or Pag-IBIG's payment partners, and keep your receipts.

If you are paid on the 15th and 30th, a fixed MP2 payment every cutoff, after your emergency fund is complete, is the easiest habit to keep.
